Together For ALS

Summary of work
Imagine what it’s like for you or a loved one to be facing rapid and relentless loss of physical functions, including the ability to move, speak and breathe unaided. The average life expectancy from symptom onset is 2-5 years for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Each year, a similar number of people die from ALS as are newly diagnosed.
In 2014, >17M people participated in the Ice Bucket Challenge, but a WHO survey reported that 98% of people didn’t know that ALS was the condition behind the campaign.
Amylyx’ endeavoured to improve understanding of this devastating condition and through collaboration with European patient organisations, the multi-country ‘Together For ALS’ (TFALS) initiative was created, providing a platform for the community to share their stories and own their narratives that will live on beyond the lives of those with this devastating condition.
Amylyx partnered with Martijn van Beenen Film & Video Production to capture powerful portraits and stories of the ALS community, who have bravely shared their stories to increase awareness and understanding of the reality of living with ALS.
TFALS.com achieved >120K visits since its launch. A connected ecosystem of targeted paid and organic social media campaigns reached >2M people in 2023.
Judges’ comments
This team has designed a touching digital campaign that cultivated good engagement with patient organisations as well as real-life patient stories to help the public understand the depth of their experiences. The judges appreciated the well-written material, which demonstrated a campaign that aimed to give back control to the patients who were suffering.
