Bringing COPD Data to Life: Interactive Spotlight Lego Heat Map
by Havas Life London
Summary of work
Often described as a ”heart sink” condition, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) affects around 3 million people in the UK. It has a serious impact on lives, yet its management remains inconsistent.
To tackle regional disparities, we needed to spark interest and focus attention where it’s needed most. As part of the SPOTLIGHT programme, we took an innovative approach to data visualisation at the Winter BTS Congress – experiential, interactive, gigantic.
Two 1.5m-tall 3D LEGO heatmaps took centre stage on the stand – with one clear goal – highlighting the stark regional differences in COPD prevalence and hospital admissions. These side-by-side maps provided an instantly recognisable and tactile representation of the data, sparking engagement and discussions. By interacting with the maps, HCPs could physically see and feel the disparities, reinforcing the urgency for tailored education and systemic change.
The installation served as both an educational tool and a conversation starter, drawing HCPs to the SPOTLIGHT stand and driving participation in further education initiatives. The visual impact of the heat maps transformed raw data into a compelling, memorable experience — turning statistics into action. This approach exemplified how innovative data visualisation can bridge the gap between insight and impact in healthcare education.
Judges’ comments
The strength of the “Bringing COPD Data to Life” was in the way it was conveyed on the stand. The Lego brought the numbers alive and it did a brilliant job visualising the data. The judges loved the visual and interactivity of it. It also had a good video, great design and was novel.
