Together for Kidney Cancer: An Action Plan to Enhance Patient Care Through Shared Decision Making

by Langland on behalf of Ipsen

Summary of work

A global survey conducted by the International Kidney Cancer Coalition (IKCC) found that over half of people living with kidney cancer said that they were not as involved as they wanted to be in planning their care, especially regarding explanations of treatment options and consideration of their personal preferences and choices. There are proven clinical and personal benefits for shared decision making (SDM) in oncology including overall survival, quality of life and adherence. Yet, despite SDM being practiced in healthcare for over 20 years, there is limited uptake in kidney cancer compared to other cancers. Ipsen sought to collaborate with world-leading healthcare professionals, patient advocacy groups, organisations and patients to better understand and address the barriers to SDM, culminating in the development of a tangible first-of-its-kind Action Plan to accelerate implementation of the practice in kidney cancer. Launched globally in May 2024, the Action Plan has so far reached over 1 million people, receiving 46k+ downloads, adapted by seven countries, has been shared within partner organisations’ networks, and SDM has even been included in medical guidelines. The Together for Kidney Cancer Action Plan has already had significant impact, which continues today.
