Tillotts LOGIC LEAD in IBD (Leadership, Exploration & Discovery)
by Tillotts Pharma UK
Summary of work
IBD nurses face many leadership challenges, yet leadership training is not routinely available in the NHS and standard leadership training does not meet the specific needs of their unique roles. A 2022 Health Foundation report (1) called for stronger NHS leadership, highlighting the need to equip frontline staff with the leadership skills to improve patient care. Many IBD nurses are promoted based on clinical expertise rather than leadership readiness, leaving them to navigate complex patient relationships, multidisciplinary teams and service advocacy without structured support.
Responding to this gap, Tillotts Pharmaceuticals launched ”Lead in IBD”, a leadership programme for experienced IBD nurses. Shaped by a nurse forum where 100% sought face-to-face leadership, Lead in IBD complements Tillotts’ LOGIC programme, which has provided 700+hours of training to 500+ nurses.
Unlike generic leadership courses, Lead in IBD follows a Learning Impact Cycle, ensuring sustained behavioural change. It:
- Pinpoints leadership barriers unique to IBD nurses.
- Delivers immersive, experience-led learning, blending coaching and real-world problem-solving.
- Turns knowledge into action through case studies, role-play and structured follow-ups.
- Measures impact—confidence surged from 5.8/10 to 8.8/10, a 52% increase.
Judges’ comments
The “Tillotts LOGIC LEAD in IBD” entry absolutely met an unmet need – a need that was really well identified. The entry was brave and insightful and the value of the program was very clear. The judges genuinely believed that anyone who goes through the program will benefit from it. An extraordinary piece of work.
