Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy Administration and Patient Care Course for Nurses

by The Learning Lab on behalf of Guy’s Cancer Academy

Summary of work

Cancer nursing in the UK faces a critical skills shortage, with an estimated 3,371 additional oncology nurses needed by 2030. Existing training options are often either impractical (long, in-person/online study days) or lack a practical focus (university-based courses). To address this, we developed a scalable, 16-week, 150-hour accredited online SACT training programme. Our innovative online learning model minimises disruption to clinical services while ensuring nurses gain essential chemotherapy administration and care skills. Using cutting-edge learning technology, including virtual reality (VR) clinical scenarios, interactive learning exercises, and intelligent assessments, the programme provides an engaging, practical, and competency-focused learning experience. Learners also benefit from live expert-led discussions, peer support, and national competency alignment with the UKONS SACT passport. Since January 2024, 512 learners have successfully completed our course, with an average evaluation score of 4.7/5 for “The course has enabled me to improve my practice/develop.” This strong result underscores both the quality and scalability of our programme.

The budget was utilised very effectively, the gap analysis was excellent, and the patient voice was strong. The panel particularly liked that the team partnered with a centre of excellence and tailored the programme to the nurses’ busy schedules.
