Summary of work
Ellie Hughes is a healthcare writer whose work goes beyond communicating science – she shapes how it’s understood and used.
As Senior Scientific Director at Camino Communications, Ellie specialises in translating complex clinical evidence into clear narratives that guide medical strategy, publications and education programmes. Clients and colleagues rely on her ability to rapidly assimilate fragmented insights from literature, advisory boards and data analyses, identify the central clinical insight and translate it into communication that informs real-world decision-making.
Alongside her client work, Ellie has contributed to advancing the craft of medical writing. She initiated and led the ACCORD-AI research project, one of the first structured investigations into how generative AI can support consensus methodology while maintaining transparency and scientific rigour.
Ellie also created Friday Nutshell, a weekly LinkedIn science commentary series that translates complex research papers into concise, engaging narratives without losing methodological nuance. Since launching in 2025, Nutshell has generated more than 28,000 impressions and over 650 engagements, and is used by academics as an example of clear scientific explanation.
Across strategy, research methodology and scientific storytelling, Ellie demonstrates a defining strength of exceptional healthcare writing: turning complex evidence into insight that people can understand, question and act upon.
Judges’ comments
The judges would love to work with Ellie! They were impressed with how her skills stretch from distilling complex science down into something simpler, but still engaging and not frivolous content. The AI contribution to the field overall was brilliant, demonstrating something that is more industry-wide than purely for the benefit of her own company. An extremely impressive individual.
