Summary of work

There are few roles within a company that touch on the breadth of topics faced by most in-house communicators. It can often feel like juggling chainsaws. Get it wrong and they can take your arm off, get it right and the results can be impressive.

In 2012 the Medtronic Europe, Middle East and Canada Communication Team turned 25 news opportunities into 11,000 articles, 45 TV appearances and presented five billion opportunities to read, see and hear about Medtronic. We did this while protecting our reputation in traditional and online media, improving employee communication and taking on new responsibilities which fundamentally changed how we plan for and execute our stories.

Judges’ comments

All of the teams who entered In-House Team of the Year were impressive, but what really set Medtronic apart was their passion, enthusiasm and belief. We saw that they were nimble and smart and that they had the most fantastically efficient use of the resources available, and that meant they achieved their SMART objectives. We were impressed by their careful consideration of career progression and learning opportunities. What became obvious to us, as judges, was that in order for their model to work they really need to trust each other and we could see that they genuinely had each others’ backs.
