Summary of work

Care for the 300,000 people living with Crohn’s, Colitis and other forms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) should be delivered in line with national IBD Standards - evidence-based guidelines for IBD services, published by professional organisations and leading charity Crohn’s and Colitis UK.

Despite improvements, the national IBD Audit demonstrated that many services are not meeting the minimum level in the IBD Standards.

Crohn’s and Colitis UK recognised that the Standards were largely inaccessible for patients and carers. The charity decided to create a guide to empower people to get the best out of their healthcare service.

My Crohn’s and Colitis Care draws on the IBD Standards, NICE Quality Standard and NHS Constitution and content was shaped by patient workshops in England and Scotland.

Distribution channels included the charity’s website and member networks, IBD services, medical conferences, press and social media, and parliamentary channels and events. The estimated reach was over 150,000 people.

My Crohn’s and Colitis Care received positive feedback, with more than 4,300 downloads, 23,800 page views and 35,000 hard copies distributed.

It is now included in hospitals’ patient packs, Crohn’s and Colitis UK’s member packs and has been used as a National Voices good practice case study.

Judges’ comments

This project took a great approach and showed strong evidence of success. The team did a fantastic job of distilling a really complex piece of work into clear writing that showed good patient engagement. It would obviously be empowering for patients and we appreciated AbbVie’s ‘hands-off’ approach to the content.
