ARENA: A Forum for Nurse Development and Excellence in Immunology
Summary of work
Chronic inflammation is the primary cause of a broad spectrum of diseases, including psoriatic arthritis, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease. These diseases are highly prevalent, and on the increase worldwide.
This is a complex area and nurse confidence in understanding the relationship in pathways between these inflammatory conditions, and subsequently which treatments best suit when multiple comorbidities are presented is an unmet need. The cross-specialty nature of not only the conditions but also the treatments has indicated that current practice pathways needed rethinking to promote cross specialty collaboration.
The COVID pandemic disrupted service structures and there were fewer opportunities for nurses to engage with their cross-specialty counterparts, effectively isolating them and limiting cross specialty engagement and the opportunity to better patient outcomes through collaboration.
AbbVie created ‘ARENA month live’ a series of integrated cross and therapy specific webinars to engage with a critical mass of nurses. Creating a unique cross specialty and therapy specific agenda.
With over 500 registrations, and 277 unique attendees this meeting was a huge success. AbbVie asked nurses how they could best support them during this time of national crisis and developed a programme based on the information their extensive research provided.
Judges’ comments
The ARENA programme was a well thought through programme that had been thoroughly researched and adapted well to take account of the ever-changing situation their audience faced and, as a result, was able to respond to their needs. It was no surprise then that the results were impressive.
