Data Visualisations Co-Created with Patients to Maximise Comprehension and Relevance

by IQVIA for Prostate Cancer Research UK

Summary of work

IQVIA and Prostate Cancer Research UK worked alongside 93 people with prostate cancer to co-create optimised data visualisations to share new study results in an accessible patient-facing study summary.

The output of this collaboration was prostate cancer-specific data visualisations for patient-reported outcomes (PRO) data that were informed, optimised and validated by patients with prostate cancer.

The project was conducted in 3 phases:

  • Phase 1: Insights and benchmarking – Patient comprehension of PRO data concepts and their preferences around optimal data presentation were examined
  • Phase 2: Collaboration – Patients provided qualitative feedback on a work-in-progress document through interviews across 3 separate waves to refine the data presentation
  • Phase 3: Validation – A follow-up survey was sent to the broader prostate cancer community to assess the impact and utility of the summary

This co-creation process and subsequent summary of PRO data are considered a huge success for patient-centricity, featuring in 2 ISMPP posters and an ISOQOL presentation, as well as winning the 2022 ‘Scientific Excellence’ award at IQVIA. An article based on this work is under review at a peer-reviewed journal.

This work promises to have a lasting impact on future data visualisations, patient-information resources and patient engagement in clinical studies.

Judges’ comments

The judges liked the process of the IQVIA and Prostate Cancer Research campaign, its optimisation and engagement with patients. The thinking and strategy around the project was really strong and the topics covered were on trend, such as health quality. The fact that it was co-created with patients stood out and it was novel, highly relevant with a clear purpose. Very well done!
