Quantifying the Burden of Respiratory Syncytial Virus

by WA Communications for Sanofi

Summary of work

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a childhood respiratory virus, which affects approximately 90% of infants under the age of two at least once in their life. The virus places a significant burden on the NHS, with 30,000 annual childhood RSV admissions.

Despite this, there has been a low awareness of the large impact RSV has on infants, families and the NHS, particularly amongst parliamentarians.

Sanofi used data to create two new dynamic resources, to tell the irrefutable data-led case at both a national and local level on the whole-system burden RSV places on the UK.

Firstly, data maps for every constituency in England were designed and displayed online, allowing parliamentarians to access statistics on the burden of RSV locally.

Secondly, the ‘RSV Townscape’, a visual depiction of the wide-ranging impact RSV has on all elements of society, displaying key data from aligned to hospitals, the home, GP surgeries, the workplace and schools.

The resources allowed us to show the impact RSV has locally, on health systems and nationally on all aspects of society – helping to successfully broaden engagement with parliamentarians and bring new life to the parliamentary debate on RSV.

Judges’ comments

The ‘Quantifying the Burden of Respiratory Syncytial Virus’ had great use of existing data to make it highly relevant to target audience. It was a really smart way to re-cut data to ensure it is as relevant and targeted as it can be.
