IBD Centres of Excellence: Growing Best Practice in IBD Units

by Lucid Partners for AbbVie

Summary of work

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) are complex, chronic conditions that have a major impact on patients’ lives. Globally there is an urgent need for improved patient care, to reduce the burden of disease symptoms, complications and co-morbidities.

The IBD Centres of Excellence (ICE) programme was designed to identify quality of care (QoC) needs and support healthcare professionals (HCPs) to optimise care and share best practice.

AbbVie commissioned an independent report to examine high quality care in IBD. A management consultancy visited internationally recognised specialised IBD centres, and identified the key QoC elements of best practice.

AbbVie recruited HCPs who identified a need to improve QoC, and were in a position to effect change in their centre.

Matching the delegate’s educational needs to the specific areas of expertise of the host IBD unit, they attended a 1.5-day global meeting.

All delegates created an action plan to improve QoC at their centre. Follow-up surveys reported on the specific actions implemented as a direct result of the ICE programme.

Delegates from >50 centres have attended ICE meetings - each centre cares for an average of >400 patients. The ICE programme has the potential to positively impact the care of more than 20,000 IBD patients worldwide.

Judges’ comments

This was such a well-tailored campaign that generated clear insights into IBD. As we were reading the submission we kept thinking ‘Wish we’d thought of that!’ and ‘How did they pull it off?’. The work meets the highly specific needs of each stakeholder in a very personal way, whilst also creating tangible outcomes that genuinely made the patient’s journey better. All in all it was very inspiring.
