Monkeypox: Supporting BASHH at the Heart of the Outbreak
Summary of work
Monkeypox (mpox) was arguably one of the biggest healthcare stories of 2022. Working with the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) – the lead organisation representing those delivering sexual healthcare across the UK – we had to adapt rapidly to build understanding of the evolving situation, and then provide BASHH with the support that would enable it to meet the needs of its core membership, and the wider public they serve.
This was achieved through putting in place a core set of strategic imperatives that would help to ensure BASHH was positioned at the centre of the response and able to effectively articulate the realties facing frontline services, as well as the corresponding resources that they needed. This support played a key role in BASHH’s wall-to-wall coverage in the media, and the critical input from the leadership team in national-level policy and commissioning decisions. Whilst the challenges of mpox remain ongoing, the work undertaken since its outbreak has ensured the immediate crisis has been met, and a strong platform has been established to support the needs of services, and service users most critically, moving forwards.
Judges’ comments
The Monkeypox entry was great overall, with clear outlined achievements. The outcomes were broad and the team worked well together to react quickly. There were clear adjustments on delivery and the insights stood out. It was a fantastic service to the community and was obviously great work.
