Speaking Up to Make COPD a Public Health Priority

by Edelman for AstraZeneca, GAAPP, IFA, Chiesi

Summary of work

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) remains under-prioritised, underfunded and under-treated despite being the third leading cause of death worldwide. AstraZeneca convened a coalition of experts, advocates and industry partners, to drive an urgency to act against the inertia, and establish COPD as a public health priority. AstraZeneca, the Global Allergy and Airways Patient Platform (GAAPP), the International Federation on Ageing (IFA) and Chiesi Farmaceutici partnered together and launched the Speak Up for COPD campaign on World COPD Day in 2021, with Edelman as the lead communications agency, laying the foundations for what was to come in 2022… This partnership campaign amplified voices of people living with COPD, ‘Speaking Up’ for those who cannot speak up for themselves. What started as a tight coalition of four partners smashed all campaign KPIs and grew into a worldwide movement to urge policymakers to prioritise COPD.
