Summary of work

Successful organisations change successfully. Those that are unable to adapt positively will fail to flourish, and great communications is the key to ensuring that positive outcomes can be generated from periods of flux. 2013 has been a year defined by change for Roche in the UK. A new General Manager, a new leadership team, a new Communications Director, a radically new operating model, new molecules and new formulations of gold standard treatment; all within the shadow of possible change back to the bad old days of constrained cancer funding and a bruising national debate on clinical trials transparency. The Roche UK Communications Team has been central to providing clarity, connectivity and consistency, while delivering better outcomes than ever before within unchanging levels of resource. We have shown that building pride in our medicines, having honest and open debate, and keeping communication channels clear between leaders and employees is a recipe for success. Roche UK has had one of its best commercial years to date, Communications is fully embedded within the core decision-making processes of the organisation, and other affiliates are now adopting the radical new UK operating model after seeing how successfully and smoothly it can be implemented.

Judges’ comments

This is a grown-up, battle hardened team that strives to have their own relations with the media. They’re greater than the sum of their parts and they work and operate very much as a team. Brave and courageous, at a time when it would have been very easy to keep their heads down, they’re always ready for the next fight. Where this outstanding Roche team are is where you want to be.
