Understanding cancer drug usage
Summary of work
The Rarer Cancers Foundation (RCF) used data to add evidence to the heated, and not always constructive, debate on access to cancer drugs, demonstrating for the first time the extent of variation in access that occurs at a national, commissioner and hospital level.
The data was analysed, displayed and communicated in creative ways, influencing a wide variety of stakeholders, improving access to drugs and shaping national policy. As a result of this programme, the charity has become the authoritative voluntary sector source of information on access to cancer drugs in the UK.
Judges’ comments
The impact and results speak for themselves – a very strong entry across the board. By basing it on reality, they brought rationale to a very emotive subject.
