From theory to theatre: overcoming barriers to innovation in surgery
Summary of work
This project transformed attitudes to, and more importantly funding for, surgical research. A carefully argued, compellingly written report provided the basis for engagement with policy, clinical, patient and media stakeholders, clearly establishing the need for change and setting out through 15 detailed recommendations how the NHS reforms could be applied to promote surgical research.
As a result, the first-ever public call for surgical research bids for funding from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) was made, the first ever NIHR surgical professor was appointed, and £750,000 of charitable funding was unlocked.
Judges’ comments
The campaign placed good writing at its heart and explained why it was important. The design of the work helped bring the writing to life and its use of plain English really brought out the subject.
