Uniting a Disparate HCM Community: Transforming Knowledge into Patient Impact

Summary of work
The introduction of the first disease-modifying therapy for obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy created an important education priority. Clinicians needed to understand new science while redesigning services, increasing capacity and leveraging multidisciplinary team (MDT) collaboration in an under-resourced NHS.
Our UK professional education programme was designed as a multi-year learning journey that promoted equitable contribution and evolved alongside clinical experience. Activities engaged ICC specialists as well as MDTs. Educational design prioritised peer learning and practical application, supporting healthcare professionals to translate knowledge into sustainable practice change, shining a light on underserved ICC patients.
Over 2 years, >590 healthcare professionals participated. Confidence in identifying/managing eligible patients increased significantly, service capability expanded, and centres treating patients grew from one to 47. ATU data demonstrated sustained behaviour change, the proportion of unstable patients not receiving a treatment change more than halved. Importantly, ‘lack of knowledge’ was no longer cited among the top reasons for non-use.
Most importantly, patients gained improved access to life-changing therapy, meaning they could return to hobbies like five-a-side football, playing the bagpipes, and enjoying whatever ‘normal life’ meant for them. This programme demonstrates how thoughtfully designed professional education can move beyond knowledge transfer to deliver lasting behavioural and system-level change.

The entry from Lucid Group and BMS was an amazing programme, where the outcomes speak for themselves. The breadth of activities across the three phases (foundation, application and scale) was very impressive in the two years!
