Summary of work
Most medical writers are cautious about AI. I chose to get ahead of it.
Since joining Camino Communications in 2024, I have played a central role in integrating AI into scientific communication while maintaining rigorous standards of quality and accuracy. I approach AI not as a separate discipline, but as part of the medical writer’s role, ensuring it enhances rather than replaces scientific expertise.
In under two years, I have contributed to award-winning initiatives, including a large-scale, 18-month internal training programme that evolved from a one-off event. Delivered through an immersive, omnichannel approach, it combined live and virtual events with interactive content to drive engagement, increasing medical affairs knowledge scores by 35% and improving team alignment. Alongside this, I supported the development of an AI-powered congress analysis tool that achieved >99% accuracy, saving 124 agency hours per congress and enabling medical teams to focus on higher-value work.
I now play a central role in training the next generation of medical writers to work confidently with AI while knowing where their expertise matters most. I’m not waiting for the future of medical writing. I’m building it.
Judges’ comments
The judges were very impressed by Gemma, and her dedication to taking part on the day of the interviews. She has an extremely strong understanding of the AI landscape and how to use it to drive efficiencies and reduce costs. She has a good instinct for what the organisation are trying to achieve and wanting to find the solution that works not for just the sake of using AI. Judges particularly loved the sentiment that the medical writer should be at the heart of the technology position in med comms.
