Excellence in Ophthalmology
Summary of work
Excellence in Ophthalmology™ is an integrated non-promotional programme of needs-based medical education, training and support for UK ophthalmologists, scientists and allied healthcare professionals. Launched in February 2012, this ongoing programme has supported more than 30 initiatives to date, which together aim to provide updates on scientific developments, share best practice in service delivery/patient pathway, and provide training opportunities to members of the UK ophthalmic community. The programme is overseen by an independent steering committee of key UK ophthalmology professionals, and initiatives are showcased through a password-protected online portal. Future initiatives will continue to be developed in response to feedback from the ophthalmology community, to ensure that they receive the support they need to deliver enhanced and expanded ophthalmology services in an ever changing and increasingly pressured environment.
Judges’ comments
This is a professional educational programme that’s all about service change. With a broad, multi-disciplinary approach it took a central idea and enabled local behavioural change to take place within ophthalmology units, which really benefited both clinicians and patients. There was diversity across the programme and the judges really liked the openness of the corporate objectives stated in the entry, which we felt gave a high degree of transparency.
