EUSOBI Breast MRI Training Programme

by Ogilvy Healthworld Medical Education for EUSOBI and Bayer

Summary of work

Despite being a powerful tool for diagnosing and treating breast cancer, the use of breast MRI (bMRI) is not yet commonplace as many radiologists lack the knowledge and confidence to perform and interpret bMRI. The objective of improving radiologists’ knowledge, skills and confidence in bMRI was therefore identified by EUSOBI and Bayer HealthCare as key to achieving the widespread, effective use of bMRI and ultimately enhancing outcomes for patients.

To meet this objective, an intensive, interactive and practical two-day training course was developed for 100 radiologists across Europe, the Middle East and India. The course content and design was based on identified gaps in current training and unmet educational needs, close consultation with experts and the latest evidence in learning techniques. The resulting course was successfully CME-accredited by EACCME.

By specifically designing the course to maximise learning and effect behaviour change, the training programme was highly successful in meeting its objectives. In particular, there were clear increases in attendee confidence concerning the use and interpretation of bMRI and 97% of attendees reported their intention to implement learnings in future practice. The course success has also led to an ongoing partnership between EUSOBI and Bayer HealthCare, with several follow-up courses held since and others planned.

Judges’ comments

Here we saw a rigorous needs assessment with an impressive focus that facilitated the development of very clear objectives and strategy for a wonderfully simple, but effective programme. It was solid and powerful, with impressively thorough analysis of effectiveness that showed a clear shift in understanding and evidence that objectives were met.
