Daring to Defeat: Hep C Elimination
Summary of work
NHS England set an ambitious goal of eliminating hepatitis C virus (HCV) by 2025. A goal even more aspirational than the World Health Organization’s deadline of 2030. As a provider of curative treatment for HCV, Gilead knew that the time had come to push forward and reach this goal.
The Hep C Elimination hybrid meeting aimed to empower drug treatment services (DTS) in England, by providing the tools, contacts and motivation necessary to defeat HCV. Our partnership with a steering committee of DTS and patient organisations ensured that the meeting accurately reflected the reality of living with HCV in order to best access the target population.
The meeting featured motivational talks, a patient’s story, role-plays, pathway workshops to determine elimination road maps and a consensus panel. A poster walk provided snapshots of service innovations and a pledge wall made up of handwritten ‘pledge cogs’ encouraged attendees to publicly commit to eliminating HCV.
The 294 delegates asked 107 questions during the one-day event. 2,393 poll responses were provided and 49 pledges were made. Delegates’ confidence about accomplishing HCV elimination doubled. The event provided ongoing support through a toolkit and enhanced skill set to enable delegates to drive forward towards HCV elimination.
Judges’ comments
Jango and Gilead’s entry had clear outtakes against objectives. They really thought about the audience and the problem they had to solve. It had good attendance and good interaction and a clear shift of behaviour in a tough environment.
